Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis

The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis was established by The Vatican in 1850 as the Diocese of Minnesota (which at that time was a territory that included not only the present state of Minnesota but also what later became the Dakotas). It was elevated to an archdiocese in 1888. Now comprising a 12-county area, the Archdiocese has 222 parishes and is home to over 750,000 Roman Catholics (roughly 25% of the population). The Cathedral of Saint Paul located in the city of St Paul and the Basilica of Saint Mary in Minneapolis serve as co-cathedrals.
