Joseph Sobran is an American Catholic writer and conservative anarchist who has written extensively on American politics and culture. His association with the National Review and the conservative movement of figures like William Buckley ended when he began to criticize America's support for Israel and was accused of anti-Semitism. He supports the theory that Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, was the true writer of the plays attributed to William Shakespeare of Stratford. In 2000, he was selected as the vice-presidential candidate of the Constitution Party, but soon resigned from the campaign saying it was affecting his work as an author. In 2004, he mounted a tongue-in-cheek write-in campaign for president.
