Pío Pico

(Redirected from Pio Pico)

Pío de Jesus Pico IV (May 5, 1801September 11, 1894) was the last Mexican Governor of Alta California, now the U.S. state of California. Among other accomplishments, he successfully survived the Mexican-American transition and after the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo he returned to Los Angeles and was elected to the Los Angeles City Council. Pico is buried at the El Campo Santo Cemetery at the Homestead Museum in the City of Industry.

Pico Boulevard , a major east-west thoroughfare in Los Angeles, is named after the governor.

Pio Pico's grandmother was listed as mulatto in the 1790 census, making him an interesting historic African American tie to California.
