Eemsmond is a municipality in the northeastern Netherlands.
Population centers
Eemshaven, Eppenhuizen, Kantens, Oldenzijl, Oosteinde, Oosternieland, Oudeschip, Roodeschool, Rottum, Startenhuizen, Stitswerd, Uithuizen, Uithuizermeeden, Usquert, Warffum, Zandeweer.
It also includes the uninhabited islands Rottumeroog and Rottumerplaat.
Eemshaven
In 1968, the Dutch government declared Eemsmond to be an economic key region. One of the key developments for the region was the construction of a sea port called Eemshaven. The new port was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Juliana in 1973. Progress since then has been somewhat hesitant and the first real advances seem likely to be the projected construction, in 2004, of a malting plant, and ongoing plans for the building of a biodiesel factory.
Uithuizermeeden
Uithuizermeeden is a small village (population about 3,200) close to the Wadden Sea.
The most important points are the Meister Toren and the Rensumaborg (a mansion dating from before 1555, not open to the public). The Meister Toren dates from the 13th century, but was rebuilt in its original style at the end of the 19th century, after a fire destroyed it.
