Theophilus

Various people have been known by the name Theophilus. These include:

• Theophilus of Antioch — c 163, an early Christian patriarch.
• Theophilus of Alexandria — (? – 412) patriarch of Alexandria.
• Theophilus of Adana (died c. 538) bishop who made a pact with the devil.
• Emperor Theophilus — (829 – 842) a Byzantine emperor of the second of the Phrygian dynasty.
• Theophilus Presbyter — (1070 – 1125) a Benedictine monk, metallurgist, and armourer. Thought to be a pseudonym of Roger of Helmarshausen
• The Theophilus to whom the Gospel of Luke is addressed; Coptic tradition asserts he was a Jew of Alexandria. (Dissenting traditions within Christianity believe the Gospel is not addressing a particular person, but any theophilus = lover of God.)

There is also a Theophilus crater on the Moon.
